The Snowflake Lobos could not get it done last Friday against the Fountain Hills Falcons in the 3A State Quarterfinals, and lost the game 23-20 at Campo Verde High School. Snowflake grabbed the early lead at 7-0 before the Falcons tied it up in the second quarter. The Lobos then went up 14-7 at halftime. With the game tied again at 14, Snowflake got on the board in the 4th quarter but failed on their point after try. In the final minutes of the game, Fountain Hills managed a touchdown but the Lobos blocked the point after try and it looked they would be sending the game into OT. That's when things went awry for Snowflake. On 4th-and-three near their own 40 yard line, under a minute to play, the Lobos decided not to punt and went for it instead. Quarterback Shawn Walker looked for Robby Martindell on a go route. Robby was matched up in single coverage by the Falcons' best DB, Jordan Henslin. The pass went incomplete and the ball went over on downs to the Falcons with a short field. Just a few plays later, Fountain Hills was at the Snowflake 18 yard line and called time out with three seconds left. On came kicker Ty Blunt for a pressure filled 36 yard attempt. The field goal was successful as time expired and the Lobos were eliminated from the playoffs. Snowflake's season ends with a 9-3 record and perhaps the satisfaction that they were capable of playing at the level of any team in 3A. The offense was led by Shawn Walker at quarterback. He threw for nearly 2000 yards and rushed for 700+. The Falcons take on the Show Low Cougars this Saturday, November 21st, at Paradise Valley High School in the 3A State Semifinals. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM. That winner will advance to the title game the following Saturday at the NAU Skydome.
