Big Expectations this season for Lobo Volleyball |
The Snowflake Lobos have found few challengers in 2009. In the 3A East and White Mountains region, they are unbeaten so far. Against EAst opponents, they are 8-0 in matches and they've won all 24 games played. Throw in St. Johns and Mogollon, and they are 12-0 in matches and perfect in 34 games played. Not bad, but with an experienced, senior led team, good results have been expected.
The Lobos are led by the front line of Jessica Johnson, Brittany Titus and Taylor Brubaker, each one standing at 5'10". The rest of the starting six are Brooklyn Rogers, Kelcie Brimhall and Jacquelyn Wolfe. Having an entire starting group that are seniors has been a big reason for Snowflake's success.
The Lobo volleyball team is among the favorites to win the 3A title this season and their spectacular season (26-4 record overall) has earned their senior group the cover of the latest Sports Zone Magazine issue. Cover Story: Snowflake Lobo Volleyball on the Attack
It seems that the only team that might be able to knock the Snowflake Lobos out of contention for the state volleyball title might just be the Lobos themselves. With just one full week before the playoffs, the Lobos sport a sparkling 23-3 record and they’re undefeated in the East. To be fair, two of the Lobos’ losses came to other 3A opponents. On September 18th they were surprised at their own tournament by the Holbrook Roadrunners, who came back to win the final two games in their match after Snowflake set the pace with a 25-18 win in game one. Poor play and mental mistakes brought on the let down that let Holbrook back in. A week later the Lobos travelled to Kayenta and were rudely greeted by a very good Monument Valley team. The Mustangs are among the top three favorites to win the title in ’09 and they showed why, picking up two close wins, 25-20 and 25-23, before shutting the door on Snowflake 25-12. The message for Snowflake is clear: nothing will come easy in their quest to win the championship.
Snowflake is led this year by an experienced senior group that makes up the entire group of six starters. Leading the way is the front line of Jessica Johnson and Brittany Titus, the team captains. Johnson averages 4.6 kills/game with a 68.5% kill ratio. Titus is close behind at 3.6 and 62.2%. The pair, along with Reagan Godfrey, lead the team in serving as well. “We love winning our games,” said Johnson. “We just got done with a tournament against all 5A teams and it helped us push ourselves harder. We didn’t do the best compared to everyone else but for ourselves we did really good.” Snowflake’s size will be a factor at state and senior Taylor Brubaker gives the Lady Lobos three players at 5’10” (along with Titus and Johnson). Brubaker has proven to be a capable hitter and server. Brubaker likes her team’s chances this year. “I think we’ll do really good this year. We have a goal to get past the first round this year, so one round at a time.” The teams that worry them most? “Definitely Monument Valley, Tuba City and Safford. And Snowflake!” The rest of the seniors on the squad help make this team a leading contender. Brooklyn Rogers, Jacquelyn Wolfe and Kelcie Brimhall take pride in their ball handling skills and help set up the front line. Good things are happening at Snowflake High School. The football team has established themselves as contenders this year. But even more impressive has been the dominance of the Lady Lobo volleyball team who should go deep in the state tournament.
